Aesthetics & Landscaping
State Highway 130 will serve as a gateway to communities along its corridor. Situated in near areas of the Texas Hill Country and the Blackland Prairie, images and symbols representative of this region will be incorporated into the project's aesthetic and landscaping treatments. To help determine the look and feel of SH 130, communities along the corridor and their local governments were asked to contribute ideas.
Options for these treatments were presented to the public in the Fall of 2002 at meetings called "aesthetic charrettes." Dialogue with local governments also gave designers clear direction in developing ideas that depict the region's native, cultural and historical influences.
Design treatments for items like abutments and retaining walls will include a 4x4 concrete panel with raised insets depicting regional icons, such as Texas wildflowers and native trees. The selection of the regional images will be made with input from local governments, giving them an opportunity to have SH 130 reflect their local area.
While some decisions will require additional input, certain design treatments for bridge structures have already been determined. Below are drawings of the treatments that were selected.
TxDOT and LSI appreciate the public's interest in the SH 130 project and want to thank everyone who participated. Please continue to visit the project website for information on the progress of other aesthetics treatments.
Final Structural Changes
Major interchanges ("Gateways" at I-35, SH 45, U.S. 79, U.S. 290, SH 71 and SH 29) will consist of rectangular direct connector columns, meaning each bridge will consist of rectangular support columns. Click here for examples.
Each rectangular column at these interchanges, along with retaining walls, will have an ashlar finish. Ashlar is a type of stone form liner which resembles a limestone wall.
The two colors to be used at major interchanges are terra cotta and buff.
The end caps for each column along SH 130 will have a star as the symbol.
Sign supports will consist of square columns with an ashlar finish.
Charrette Meeting Content
Charrette meetings were held in the fall of 2002 to gather public input on SH 130 aesthetics. Below is the presentation from the meetings.
Note - some of these sections contain many images and may take some time to download over slower internet connections.

Landscaping and Landscape Lighting
The landscaping of SH 130 will have a natural theme with some elements of cultural significance. This natural aspect consists of Texas wildflowers, plants native of the Blackland Prairie and native Texas trees. Incorporated into the natural theme will be items of cultural influence, such as cedar fencing and rubble stone walls. More decisions on landscaping will come at a later date.
